Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC) evolved from an animal orphanage set up by the Game Department in 1952 as a sanctuary to care for; the sick, injured, orphaned wild animals, sometimes confiscated from illegal wildlife trade. In 1994, under the Trustees Incorporation Act Cap 147, UWEC was transformed into the Entebbe Zoo. Through the UWEC Act-2015, UWEC is now a fully-fledged statutory body under the Ministry of Tourism Wildlife and Antiquities by the UWEC Act, 2015.

The UWEC Act, 2015 mandates UWEC to; undertake Conservation Education, wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and breeding of endangered animal species among others. 

UWEC is seeking to recruit competent candidates for the following vacancies for a contract period of four years renewable upon satisfactory performance:

  1. JOB TITLE:                            Marketing and Business Development Officer (1)

DEPARTMENT:                        Marketing and Business Development                         

GRADE:                                     W 5

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:     Executive Director

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB: 

Responsible for identifying and developing new business opportunities that support UWEC’s growth strategy. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Develop and execute a comprehensive marketing and business plan for UWEC
  2. Develop a business growth strategy for UWEC.
  3. Design, develop and implement income generating programs for UWEC.
  4. Market UWEC programs and services to corporates, institutions, schools and the general public
  5. Develop fundable business proposals and participate in proposal writing for fundraising activities.
  6. Contribute to social media platforms and UWEC website to attract more clients.
  7. Lead the growth and development of existing and new businesses for UWEC.
  8. Build and manage relationships with donors, cooperates, Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
  9. Plan and organize the special events at UWEC.
  10. Manage and continuously review existing programs
  11. Performing any other duties as may be required from time to time by the UWEC management.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism, Marketing, Business Administration from a reputable/recognized institution and Certificate in Project Planning and Management will be an added advantage.

 

Experience

 

  • 3 years of which 2 years MUST be from a Tourism, Conservation facility or service industry
  1. JOB TITLE:                         Public Relations Officer (1)

DEPARTMENT:                                Executive Director’s office

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:            Executive Director

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB: 

Responsible for development and implementation of UWEC’s communication strategies in line with organizational goals and objectives

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and execute consistent communication strategy for UWEC.
  • Develop and implement an all-inclusive Corporate Affairs, Communications budget that will ensure return on investment and increase UWEC’s footprint and public awareness.
  • Develop crisis management communication policies and procedure in line with the mandates of UWEC.
  • Develop strategic-level collaborative partnerships that will maximize and add value to the growth of UWEC while mitigating the risk and exposure on its target market.
  • Develop the Corporate Social Responsibility strategy and ensure that it meets the objectives, standards and expectations of the UWEC, participating partners and beneficiaries.
  • Plan, develop and implement public relations strategies regarding promotion of UWEC.
  • Use all forms of media and communications to project and protect UWEC’s image including updates on the website.
  • Research, write and disseminate press releases to targeted media on activities of the UWEC.
  • Writing and editing in-house magazines, case studies, speeches, articles, quarterly and annual reports.
  • Plan and organize press conferences to enhance the reputation of UWEC.
  • Performing any other duties in the line of communication, media and public relations as may be required from time to time by the UWEC management.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Mass communication or any other related field

Experience

  • 3 years of which 2 years MUST be from a Tourism, Conservation facility or service industry
  1. JOB TITLE:                         Legal Officer (1)

DEPARTMENT:                        Executive Director’s Office                       

GRADE:                                     W 5

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:     Executive Director

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB: 

To provide legal advisory services and counsel in the interests of UWEC

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide legal advice and opinion on legal matters to all operational units of UWEC.
  1. Review and propose amendments to legal documents, Standard Operating Procedures and manuals used in UWEC’s operations for compliance with new legislations and best practices.
  1. Review pending documentation required in representing UWEC in courts of law for protection and enforcement of its interests.
  1. Represent UWEC in Courts of Law in case there is need
  1. Keep management appraised of new legislation and regulations regarding UWEC’s operations.
  1. Ensure all documents with service providers, business partners and other stakeholders including contracts, agreements, collaterals and others prepared or involving UWEC safeguard its interests.
  1. Record and circulate minutes of the meetings of the Board, its Committees and Management and during these proceedings provide guidance on legal       governance issues      or matters that may arise for UWEC’s compliance with the       relevant laws and best practice.
  1. Promptly advise management on the decisions taken by the Board and committee and particularly those requiring management action and coordinate management’s time submission of reports for consideration.
  1. Develop an annual work plan and budget for the Board.
  1. Drafting legal documents and other legal correspondences.
  1. Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor from time to time.

Minimum Qualifications;

  • Honor’s Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LLB) from a recognized University.
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from Law Development Centre.
  • Advocate of the High Court is an added advantage
  • Membership to relevant professional bodies

The Minimum Experience:

  1. JOB TITLE: Monitoring and Evaluation Officer

DEPARTMENT:                                            Executive Director’s Office

GRADE:                                                         UWEC 5

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:                                    Executive Director

 

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB: 

Responsible for leading the project team in the development and implementation of an M&E

system and oversee routine program monitoring activities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Lead the planning and implementation of monitoring and evaluation of activities on effectiveness of all UWEC program areas.
  1. Prepare for and conduct Strategic Plan performance reviews and evaluations.
  1. Conduct regular inspections to all work areas, detect areas that violate the guidelines, poses human, animal risk/ hazard and initiate corrective measures.
  1. Maintain positive contact between UWEC and program partners, funders and other stakeholders.
  1. Responsible for the quality of M&E related data to be collected throughout any program implementation.
  2. Coordinate the preparation of all performance reports and guide staff to prepare progress reports in accordance with approved reporting formats and guidelines.
  1. Document results of the M & E system and produce periodic reports required by Board.
  1. Monitor the performance of staff at UWEC through setting realistic Key Performance Indicators and asses and evaluate them.
  1. Performs any other official duties as may be assigned by the supervisor

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • A Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, development studies, statistics, economics or related field
  • A post graduate diploma in project planning and management will be an added advantage.
Experience

  • 3 years of which 2 years MUST be from a Tourism, Conservation facility or service industry
  • Experience in planning processes, performance management, monitoring and evaluation, capacity building or any other related field.

 

 

 

 

  1. JOB TITLE: Internal Auditor

DEPARTMENT:                                            Executive Director’s Office

GRADE:                                                         UWEC 5

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:                                    Board of Trustees

 

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB: 

Responsible for developing, managing and directing the strategic activities of the internal Audit engagements in accordance with existing regulations and guidelines.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Develop policies and procedures for the internal audit division so as to provide guidance and governance framework of audit services at UWEC.
  2. Conducting compliance audits to determine whether UWEC’s activities comply with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Prepare and present audit reports to senior management and Board Audit Committee and high light risky areas that require attention and follow up implementation of any actions agreed upon in line with UWEC’s audit guidelines.
  1. Reviewing UWEC’s risk management processes to ascertain that risks are correctly evaluated, reported and managed.
  2. Examine correctness of payment requests, completeness of documentation and certify requisition or, transactions for further processing.
  3. Verify receipts, match and undertake on-line reconciliation of invoices and Local Purchase Orders for goods and services procured prior to effecting payments.
  • Compile accountability returns, verify and retire advance ledgers.
  • Maintain primary financial records and up-to-date books of account.
  1. Prepare periodic reconciliations of financial statements and carry out monthly cash book reconciliations to bank statements.
  2. Verify payroll change requests and reports to ensure correctness of computations, payments and deductions; certify and follow-up approval and payment to beneficiaries
  3. Any other role as directed by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:                 Honors Bachelor degree in Finance and Accounting.

                                                            Honors Bachelor degree with a bias in Accountancy or Audit option obtained from a recognized awarding Institution

                                                             Or Full professional qualification in Accountancy or Audit obtained from a recognized awarding Institution accredited by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU).

Experience:                                       5 years of which 2 should be at senior management level.

  1. JOB TITLE:                            Information Technology Supervisor (1)

DEPARTMENT:                        Finance and Administration                         

GRADE:                                     W 6

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:    Finance and Administration manager

Directly supervises:                  None

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Overseeing the provision of software (application/ information systems) support services over the UWEC’s ICT infrastructure and resources including:
  1. Developing state-of-the-art Information Systems and supporting the business activities of the Centre.
  2. Ensuring the continuity, maintenance and security of the UWEC’s information, ICT infrastructure and resources.
  3. Ensuring that the Centre’s internet connections, website and intranet are fully functional and well maintained.
  1. Maintaining all information systems at the Centre including:
  2. Developing an application maintenance schedule; managing efficient implementation of backup, virus protection and security procedures, including data protection policies.
  3. Running daily and/or periodic system and data up-dates, and submitting status reports to the F&A Manager or other appropriate Centre managers.
  4. Ensuring that the Centre’s website is continuously updated.
  5. Implementing and monitoring all software-based information security controls, policy, procedures and standards.
  6. Supporting and implementing software-based quality control measure for converted courses.
  7. Maintaining a database/log of all installed hardware and software; maintaining a software library and storing original copies of installed applications
  8. Documenting all installed systems.
  9. Designing, implementing, monitoring and reviewing procedures for managing and recording installations and configuration changes.
  10. Maintaining the network operating system, Internet filtering systems and setting up disk caches and firewalls.
  11. Performing other duties as may become necessary for the smooth running of the          Department or Centre as a whole.

Minimum Qualifications:                 Diploma in ICT

Experience:                                       Three years’ experience
